Te Arawa standing committee seeks new waka

A Te Arawa hui a iwi is planned for early next year to consider how iwi want to work with Rotorua District Council.
The hui is being called by members of the council’s Te Arawa Standing Committee, who are reviewing the committee’s purpose and functions.
Member Arapeta Tahana, who also holds one of the Maori seats of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, says the aim is to ensure the iwi has the right waka, the right resources and the right people to develop a genuine partnership with council that contributes to sound decision-making and helps achieve its collective aspirations.
The review is endorsed by new mayor Steve Chadwick, who says it is essential to acknowledge the significant role tangata whenua have in the future development of the district.
