Ngati Whatua kaumatua Takutai Wikiriwhi dies

Rev Takutai Wikiriwhi received the Insignia of a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order for services to Maori in 2008.

Ngati Whatua o Orakei is mourning its kaumauta Takutai Doc Wikiriwhi, who died this morning at the age of 83.

Mr Wikiriwhi was a familiar sight for many years not only on the paepae at Orakei Marae but representing the hapu in ceremonies and commemorations as it took an increasing role in the civic life of Auckland city.

He was also a lead claimant in Ngati Whatua’s Kaipara claim, and an apostle of the Ratana church.

He served as kaumatua or advisor on numerous boards and committees, including the Mental Health Foundation and Auckland University, and was awarded a Queens Service Order in 2008 for his service.

Takutai Wikiwhi will lie in state overnight at Orakei Marae.
