Ngapuhi to talk with Ngati Hine

A longstanding rift between the runanga and Ngati Hine came to a head at the runanga’s annual meeting at the weekend when a large contingent from the hapu blocked the adoption of any of the reports.
Chair Raniera Tau says the long-standing row needs to be resolved.
He says there is some skepticism about calls for a tikanga-based approach, given the history of litigation between the parties.
"We need to know what their tikanga looks like so we will be able to engage in that, we haven’t quite found out what that tikanga really means.
There is going to be a meeting in the near future where a group of kaumatua and kuia from Ngapuhi and a group from Ngati Hine will sit down and try to walk their way through this issue and see if there is an amicable way through this," he says.
Te Runanga o Ngati Hine wants to take what it considers its share of Maori fisheries settlement assets, but the size of that share is one of the disputes.
