Brown warm on waterfront culture centre

Auckland mayor Len Brown is keen to see progress on a Maori and Pacific cultural centre on the city’s waterfront.
The proposal is coming from the Kiwa working group, which is eying a site on Queens Wharf for a rehearsal, performance and exhibition space.
Mr Brown says the idea has been around for a while in various guises, and it’s probably when rather than if such a centre will be built, with both Queens Wharf and Wynyard Wharf in the frame.
"Look, if I'm elected on October 12, it's certainly one of those areas where I would look for some real go forward in the next three years," he says.
Mr Brown says the success of Ngati Whatua’s Waka Maori, the prefab pavilion used in the Rugby World Cup and in San Francisco for the America’s Cup challenge shows there is a demand for such a facility.
