Labour eyes housing opportunity
Hauraki-Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta says the Reserve Bank’s new home lending criteria will punish first home buyers in her electorate.
She says the 20 percent minimum deposit for home loans is an attempt to tackle runaway house prices in Auckland and Christchurch.
She says it shows the Government has no answers to the housing affordability crisis.
"This is going to be a key part in Labour winning back support from the provinces, is to have something that is broader in terms of having some options for home ownership that can reach deep into the provinces and give first home buyers especially the opportunity to own their own home," Ms Mahuta says.
Labour has already announced its plans for a capital gains tax and its intention to build more social housing, and it will also tackle issues of availability and affordability.
