Threat to fish settlement lifted

Parliament’s primary production select committee has watered down the fisheries amendment bill to allow iwi to continue using foreign chartered fishing vessels.
Iwi told the committee that making requiring all FCVs to be reflagged to New Zealand while operating within this country’s Exclusive Economic Zone would reduce the value of the treaty settlement fisheries quota.
The committee says there should be an exemption for vessels operated by an operator who derive a significant proportion of their annual catch entitlements from settlement quota.
Foreign tuna fishing boats can also seek exemptions.
The committee decided not to impose minimum crew requirements because it considered the issue should be tackled as part of a broader approach to workforce and industry development.
