More time for say on constitution
The Constitutional Advisory Panel has extended the deadline for submissions for another month until the end of July.
Co-Chair Sir Tipene O’Regan says there is growing interest in the Constitution Conversation, as people put forward their views on the current constitutional arrangements and how they want New Zealand to be run in the future.
He says the panel is starting to see a better understanding of the issues and a broader range of ideas.
More than 1500 submissions have been received so far.
Key themes emerging from the submissions and 100 public meetings include common values, changing population, the checks and balances on the institutions that hold public power, the role of the Treaty of Waitangi, the balance between majority and minority rights, the protection of Maori culture and identity, and improving the level of knowledge about the constitution.
Members of the Constitutional Advisory Panel are hosting a hui at Ngā Whare Waatea marae in Mangere tomorrow, starting at 10am.
