Parties concerned at by-election turn-out
Parties contesting the Ikaroa-Rāwhiti by-election are trying to find ways to boost what could be a low turn-out.
Five parties and two independents are vying to replace Labour’s Parekura Horomia, who died at the end of April.
Hauraki Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta says Labour’s candidate Meka Whaitiri is showing she understands the issues and connects well with those voters she can meet in the huge seat.
She says turn out is always a challenge in a by-election.
"You know there is a lot more effort that has to be put in to letting people know they can vote early, vote before June 29 and they have to get out and vote. It is one thing to say you support a candidate. It is another thing entirely when people en endorse that support with their vote," Nanaia Mahuta says.
