Motu best opponent in round two
It took boxer Mea Motu just over three minutes to chalk up her 19th straight victory, with the referee stopping Friday’s bout against 20-year-old Thai Noppaket Srisawas (Nop-pa-ket Sree-sa-was) in the second round after a flurry of unanswered punches.
Motu used her jab, uppercut and hook to overwhelm her younger but heavier opponent.
The Kaitaia-based IBO World Super Bantamweight champion says knowing who she is and where she’s from gives her the confidence to take on her opponent and the world.
“For me when I walk into that ring I’m fighting for me for my people for my ancestors who fought for who I am who fought to bring me into this world who fought for my language and that’s who I am,” Motu says.
It could be one of Motu’s last fights in Aotearoa, as she and her gym have signed to Australian promoters No Limit Boxing run by former NRL player George Rose and his brother Matt.
