Ngāti Haua do fast track deal
Waikato iwi Ngāti Haua is set to sign a settlement for its historic treaty claims today after a fast-tracked negotiation.
The iwi signed terms of negotiation in December, and it has benchmark similar settlements in the region to reach a deal which gives it just $13 million cash and several cultural redress properties.
It will buy and lease back to the respective crown agencies Firth Primary and Matamata Intermediate schools and the college and courthouse at Morrinsville.
The deed of settlement will be signed at Tamahere, where Ngāti Haua rangatira Wiremu Tamihana Tarapipipi laid down his taiaha in May 1865.
