Pressure Mounts For Tainui Change
The convenor of a hui looking at alternate governance structures for Waikato – Tainui says there is a mood for change.
The hui was called by King Tuheitia in an attempt to stop continuing conflict between the 181-member parliament, Te Kauhanganui, and the executive board Te Arataura.
Tukoroirangi Morgan says that structure may have been appropriate when the tribe when settled its raupatu claim 18 years ago, but it doesn’t work now.
“Clearly that’s been the problem that we’ve had two entities, Te Arataura and Te Kauhanganui. The war and factions will continue to happen. The issue here is now how do we get to a simple structure. Our people have made it clear that they want change. Simple the better”. Tukoroirangi Morgan says.
