Whangarei hikoi breaks silence on domestic violence
The killing of Whangarei woman has inspired Northlanders to speak out against domestic violence.
The whānau of Patricia McGrath were joined by hundreds of others in a march through Central Whangarei today.
It coincided with the appearance in court of 32-year-old Phillip Andre Mahanga, 32, who has been charged with the murder of the 34-year-old mother of two earlier this month.
Some of the marchers carried posters of those they had lost to domestic violence.
Speakers said the march wasn't about retribution but about dealing with the pain and suffering and about urging the community to support those caught up in violent relationships.
