University knocked back on fee rise
The Māori tertiary students association Te Mana Akonga is welcoming the Tertiary Education Commission’s refusal to let Victoria University boost student fees by 8 percent.
Its president, Ivy Harper, says the fees would have hit courses most often taken by Māori and Pacific learners, and would have undermined efforts to get more Māori engaged in tertiary education.
She says Māori student debt already stands above $2 billion.
One of the university’s justifications for fee’s to rise was that it would give it more money for pastoral programmes for Māori students.
