Mana wants major state house effort

Mana leader Hone Harawira says the Government should be building state houses, not kicking people out of existing houses and selling the land to private developers.
In the Auckland District Court yesterday, the Te Tai Tokerau MP pleaded not guilty to a charge of refusing to move his car during a protest against the removal of houses in Glen Innes.
He says Mana wants to see 20,000 state houses built in the next two years.
"You don’t actually get rid of the housing problem but you do begin the process of dealing with homelessness. You also create work, you create apprenticeships, you get communities feeling comfortable and safe about where they are living and that’s the aim of that whole exercise," he says.
Mr Harawira says he will defend himself at the hearing next March, and it’s likely to take more than the half day the court set aside.
