Te Arawa claim negotiator dies
Te Arawa iwi are mourning Rawiri Te Whare of Ngāti Tahu – Ngāti Whaoa, who was chief negotiator for their treaty claims.
The father of three died yesterday afternoon at Waikato Hospital.
Mr Te Whare was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his work on behalf of Te Pumautanga ō Te Arawa negotiating settlement of Te Arawa's historic land claims and also its share of the Central North Island forestry settlement.
He was previously head of the school of Maori studies, humanities and visual arts at Waiariki Institute of Technology.
Rawiri Te Whare will be taken to his home marae in Reporoa later today.
