Aoraki joined by fellow voyagers
The New Zealand Geographic Board has called for public submissions on new names for the Aoraki Mt Cook region.
Ngāi Tahu wants to promote an alternate name for the Mount Cook Range, Kirikirikatata, after the grandfather of Aoraki.
A currently unnamed part of the Southern Alps is to be called Aroarokaehe Range, after an ancestor who was on the waka Arai Te Uru with Kirikirikatata and Aoraki.
Tasman Glacier will also be called Haupapa, a name passed by elders to an early recorder of oral history, Herries Beattie.
Ngāi Tahu says there is now general acceptance of dual names among the public.
