Protest to continue as ACT pitches treaty plan
Labour MP Willie Jackson expects protests around te Tiriti o Waitangi will continue for at least another six months.
He says the rage against ACT leader David Seymour’s proposed Treaty Principles Bill was heard at Turangawaewae, Ratana and Waitangi.
It will continue as long as the Bill is before parliament, with Government parties committed to fast tracking it to the select committee.
“Unless (PM Christopher) Luxon steps in – his choice, the great uniter who never wanted division. Never been so much division over a kaupapa since foreshore and seabed,” Mr Jackson says.
Meanwhile, ACT has launched an information campaign to support its Treaty Principles Bill.
Leader David Seymour says ACT believes every child growing up in New Zealand deserves the same respect and dignity, including equality before the law.
He says Article Three of the Treaty of Waitangi promises the same rights and duties for all New Zealanders.
He says his law will unwind the modern ‘partnership’ interpretation of the Treaty and restore its meaning to what was actually written and signed in 1840.
