Aotearoa change keep athletes on gold track
New Zealand fans are helping lift the performances of our athletes in Birmingham as Aotearoa collects a record Commonwealth Games medal haul.
By the end of day 10, the Aotearoa tally is 19 golds, 12 silver and 17 bronze for a total of 48.
Cyclist Aaron Gate won his fourth gold of the games in the men’s road race yesterday while squash duo Paul Coll and Joelle King beat England in the mixed doubles event.
Waatea correspondent Jodi Ihaka says her highlight for the day was Aotearoa’s beach volleyball match-up against Vanuatu, despite missing out on the bronze.
“The crowd was going off. The supporters were amazing. They have the chants which are like ‘volley, volley, volley,’ or ‘oi, oi, oi,’ except for New Zealand, we went Aotearoa hard and it was ‘tutira mai nga aue,’ and that was pretty special, pretty, pretty awesome,” she says.
