Hapū need to step up for taitamariki
Children’s Minister Kelvin Davis is calling on iwi, hapu and communities to work out how they would look after children rather than have them taken by Oranga Tamariki.
There’s $23 million in the budget to improve iwi and community collaboration with the child protection agency.
“Oranga Tamariki’s role is going to reduce, be minimised. They will be there as a supportive role, and enabler, but communities are going to be making decisions for themselves on how best to meet the needs of taitamariki and whanau in their community and this is really really important work and this is what Māori have been calling for,” Mr Davis says.
