Te Huarahi Hararei renamed
It's known as Te Huarahi Hararei, but the New Zealand Transport Agency wants the new road of national significance from Puhoi to Wellsford to be called something other than the holiday highway.
Regional Director Stephen Town says in consultation with local Māori, it has gone for the more basic name Ara Tuhono or connecting pathway.
He says that reflects the route's objectives of improving transport connections between Auckland and Northland.
Tame Te Rangi from Hokai Nuku, which represents the area’s iwi and hapū, says once it's finished the highway will be not just a road to Auckland but a gateway to the rest of the world.
