Māori seats part of Northland council plan
The Local Government Commission has agreed to assess the Far North District Council’s plan for a unitary authority which would include three Māori seats.
The plan has upset the Northland Regional Council, which would be merged into the new body.
Regional Council Chair Craig Brown says he’s pleased the plan will be assessed by an independent body, but his council is going ahead with a fact-finding exercise on the form of local government Northlanders wanted.
He says the consultation could be done in collaboration with Whangarei and Kaipara District Councils.
