Recipe for success a ministry secret
There’s a warning the latest plan to boost Māori student’s success will fail without a significant change of attitude by the Education Ministry.
The Ministry has been slammed by the Audit Office for the way it rolled out the Ka Hikitia Māori Education Framework.
Lack of support and conflict with other objectives like national standards meant most schools did not understand or implement the plan.
Laures Park from the Education Institute says the same thing is likely to happen to Building on Success, which was announced at the same time the government said it was dropping the professional development programme Te Kotahitanga.
"We actually don’t know anything about it but apparently it's going to make everyone successful. That's the frustration about it. Nobody talks to us about it, nobody talks to the people in the classroom, nobody talks to the parents about it, so how do we know that it is going to be successful and how do we know that we can put our might behind it to ensure that it works," she says.
Ms Park says the ministry also needs to engage more with schools when it relaunches Ka Hikitia.
