Jigsaw tackling complex task
The new chief executive of support network Jigsaw says issues of child abuse, neglect and family violence don't have simple solutions.
Sunny Wikiriwhi of Te Arawa and Tuwharetoa has worked in the criminal justice and health sectors.
She says while the statistics around Māori violence and abuse are alarming, it's not just a Māori problem, and there are a range of factors in that the 44 organisations in Jigsaw take into account when developing programmes.
“Poverty is a huge factor. We believe in terms of violence against women and parenting at times can be difficult. We’re not about blaming our whānau or our parents, Jigsaw and our network partners is about providing support in our communities and to really make our communities a safe place for our people,” she says.
Sunny Wikiriwhi says she will be looking for ways to improve on Jigsaw's core services.
