Te Tai Tonga MP Rino Tirikatene is backing the creation of low cost dental services in Southland.
University of Otago dental specialist Professor John Broughton has been pushing for an outreach service in Invercargill because of the number of Murihiku Māori coming up to Dunedin to receive low cost care at dental schools.
Mr Tirikatene says other services in the region are too expensive.
He says the Southland District Health Board should establish a low-cost dental clinic for the poor and low waged earners.
