No regrets from Jones
Departing Labour politician Shane Jones says standing for the Labour leadership was a good cap to his political career.
The list MP is looking forward to starting a new ambassador level job working with Pacific states on fisheries, trade and economic development issues.
He says highlights in his nine years in parliament were the support he got from Helen Clark and Michael Cullen, who made him a minister in his first term, and working with current Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson on settlements.
He says standing for Labour’s leadership felt liberating, after some tough times in opposition.
"I think it gave me a chance to show some of my talents and whilst I was not successful, I myself felt I had redemmed myself to my colleagues and then with a clear mind if I chose to go on and do something else I would harbour no sort remorse" he says.
Shane Jones will deliver his valedictory speech about 5.50pm this afternoon.
