Maori MPs drive immigration rethink
Labour leader David Cunliffe has indicated he’s willing to put a debate on immigration into the election melting pot.
New Zealand First, who could be needed as a coalition partner for a future Labour-led Government, has already called for a rethink.
Mr Cunliffe says under National immigration has wobbled from too few people coming in to too many, and now there are about twice the number of migrants than are needed.
" And what I’m hearing from our Maori caucus is people aren't opposed in principle to immigration they just want it to be well managed and compatible with tino rangatiratanga which means have a positive steady flow of migrants at a level which assists our economy and creates jobs but not so many that we cant house them, feed them, educate people or have hospital beds full when they get sick " says David Cunliffe
