Views sought on Maori literacy
Consultation starts today on what needs to go into a national strategy for Maori adult literacy and numeracy.
The Haea Te Pu Ata strategy is being developed for the Tertiary Education Commission by the New Zealand Council for Education research.
Maori reference group member Keith Ikin from Waiariki Polytechnic says a survey of adult literacy more than a decade ago found more than half of Maori adults have literacy levels below minimum world standard.
He says while the government is putting a lot of emphasis into raising standards at pre-school and school level, a multipronged approach is needed that recognises a large proportion of New Zealanders of working age don’t have the foundation skills.
The first hui is in Christchurch on today, then Gisborne tomorrow, followed by Whangarei and Rotorua.
