Jones presents credentials to Nauru
Former Labour MP Shane Jones has presented his credentials to the government of Nauru as the new High Commissioner to the small island state.
He has also been appointed to represent New Zealand in Mauritius and the Seychelles, in addition to his role as Pacific Economic Development Ambassador.
Foreign Minister Murray McCully says Mr Jones’ job is to represent New Zealand as a partner who will support small island developing states on the international stage and provide practical advice on development assistance.
An important part of that is helping to foster greater cooperation between the Pacific region and other regional groupings of island states.
On his latest run into the Pacific, the New Zealand-based diplomat has also been in Fiji addressing a business conference and meeting with fisheries stakeholders.
He told them countries in the region needed to manage catch effort and coordinate their activities to ensure fisheries like southern albacore tuna are sustainable.
