Iwi balance health role
Post settlement iwi may take a greater role in health and other social services, but they don’t want to let the crown off the hook.
That’s the conclusion of a Maori researcher who has been looking at whether Treaty of Waitangi settlements have benefited Maori when it comes to income, housing, employment and education.
Papatuanuku Nahi told this week’s NZ Congress on Population Health that settlements have increased the capability of iwi to address the health and wellbeing of their members.
Interviews with iwi leaders show they are involved in a wide range of collaborations and partnerships, especially in health.
