Persistence rewarded for Pikihuia writers
They try and they try, and eventually they hit gold.
That’s the experience of two of the winners in this year’s Pikihuia awards.
Aroha Awarau entered his first story 25 years ago during his last year of school, but came nowhere.
This year a script by the Women’s Weekly journalist about a sex worker who looks after her kids in between jobs on the street script won the award for best short film script.
And Darryn Joseph, who says getting his first short story rejected 20 years ago hasn’t stopped him writing and entering the biennial contest, won the best Maori short story award with 'Taku Ao, To Mate Kanehe', about three sailors in the pub talking about lost love.
Huia Publishers director Brian Morris says it was a great selection of entries from writers new and old, with the best stories included in the 11th volume of Huia Short Stories available now.
