Eloquence of new Maori generation revealed
It’s Nga Manu Korero time again, when secondary schools vie to see who is producing the most eloquent and persuasive speakers in Maori and English.
The hosts this year are Te Whanganui-a-Tara ki Otaki, Awakairangi and Wairarapa Maori teachers, and the ope from round the country are filling up Te Rauparaha stadium in Porirua.
Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Whanau Tahi principal Melanie Riwai-Couch is shepherding three contestants and ten times that number of fellow students, kaiako and kaumatua from Christchurch to the competitions, and she says a great programme has been developed for the 50th anniversary event.
Nga Manu Korero runs until Thursday.
