Te reo research celebrated
Nga Pae o Te Maramatanga, the Maori centre for research excellence and Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori today celebrate their Kia Ita scholarships for Maori language researchers.
A ceremony at Auckland University’s Waipapa Marae will hear progress reports from the first five recipients and hand out this year’s scholarships.
The 2016 recipients are Anahera Scott from Ngati Kahungunu, Hinerangi Miriata Wiri who has Te Arawa, Ngai Tuhoe, and Ngati Paoa whakapapa, Te Kewena White from Tuhoe, Teresa Pirihira Denise Bowen from Ngati Porou and Te Arawa, and Hema Temara from Tuhoe.
The $10,000 grants allow Masters students to complete a thesis or dissertation specifically on Maori language revitalisation or a thesis on any subject written in te reo Maori.
The idea is to enhance the growth and development of te reo Maori within the research space.
