Maori values have business value
Maori are being urged to develop business models aligned to their own culture rather than simply replicate western models.
A new report by Riria Te Kanawa and Joe Hanita from global accounting firm KPMG and Jamie Rihia from ASB Bank says future success will depend on having the confidence and courage to simply be Maori.
Maui Rau: Adapting in a Changing World looks at Maori entrepreneurs who are succeeding globally.
Ms Te Kanawa says business is learning to value principles of social responsibility, sustainability, collective purpose and culture that comes naturally to Maori.
"We have things we do by nature that are valued well beyond Maori, particularly globally, so I think it is important we get that wide spread we can be confident who we are, we don't have to change our stripe, and we do have a lot to offer," she says.
Riria Te Kanawa says it’s also important tamariki get more exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics so they are prepared to become future global citizens
