Vote chance to debate housing state
Labour leader Andrew Little is celebrating getting his Healthy Homes Bill past its first reading.
The support of United Future’s Peter Dunn, as well as the votes of the Maori Party, the Greens and New Zealand First meant issues around the poor quality of rental housing can be examined by a select committee.
Mr Little says his bill goes further than a Government measure which only looks at insulation.
That’s no good if there is no source of heating in the middle of winter, poor ventilation and other factors which have created a chronic mould problem in tens of thousands of New Zealand homes.
"The Children’s Commissioner put up some information on the governments Bill that said 42,000 children are turning up in hospital each year because of brochial conditions, and respiratory conditions and asthma all caused by moulds in homes so we can fix this and there's a huge savings to us if we do so that's where we're going on it," says Andrew Little.
