Maori Party candidate cleared of bribery charge
The Electoral Commission has cleared Maori Party Botany candidate Wetex Kang of bribery.
It told the Malaysian-Chinese businessman it’s satisfied he had not given any money directly or indirectly to induce and elector to vote for him.
Volunteer administering Mr Kang’s page on WeChat, a popular Chinese social media platform, had posted so called red envelopes containing small amounts of virtual money to encourage people to circulate election advertisements.
The commission says it would caution candidates and parties against using the WeChat red envelopes.
Maori party president Tukoroirangi Morgan says Mr Kang has been the victim of a smear campaign.
