Settlement money directed to literacy
Te Putea Whakatupu, the trust charged with using treaty fisheries settlement money for the benefit of urban Maori through education and training, is looking to team up with Whanau Ora providers to promote literacy and numeracy.
New chair Willie Te Aho says over the past decade the trust funded university scholarships, conferences and networking.
The strategic direction outlined at last week’s Maori Fisheries Conference was to focus on literacy and numeracy for tamariki in primary and intermediate school level.
He says Whanau Ora can help identify where support is needed.
"If you are looking at a whanau that has issues of poverty or truancy you will find that there are numeracy literacy issue tied up there not only with the students but also perhaps the parents. It makes sense to take a wholesome approach and that's why we are committed to working through the Whanau Ora commissioning agencies for the North Island and the South Island to achieve our targets," he says.
Willie Te Aho says Te Putea Whakatupu has just over $1million a year to distribute, so teaming up with other organisations is a good way to increase its effectiveness.
