Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox says Australia's experience shows a full inquiry into the abuse of children in state care would benefit this country.
The government has rejected such an inquiry, saying it is fixing any problems through its creation of the Ministry for Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki
But the justice and electoral select committee today considered a petition calling for a royal commission on the issue.
Ms Fox was across the Tasman last week with the committee talking to politicians and the head of the Australian inquiry into abuse of children.
She says that inquiry related in changes not just in government but in non-government organisations and in public perceptions of abuse.
"The whole nation has taken a mind set change. It interrupted what people perceived was normal and blown apart the myths of where people thought abuse was coming from and laid it all out on the table, said we cannot do this any more to our children," Ms Fox says.
She says child abuse is something that affects all sectors of society, which is why an inquiry needs to leave no stone un-turned.
