Bidois gives low down on National vote
National’s candidate for tomorrow’s Northcote by-election says the party is attracting a growing number of Maori.
Dan Bidois, who moved to the electorate after winning the nomination, says if voters are looking for someone who is aspirational, local and a fighter, they should vote for him.
The self-described urban Maori left school at 15 to work as a butcher, but after a bout of cancer and being encouraged to study he racked up four degrees, including a Masters from Harvard in the United States.
He says being in National he sees people from all walks of life including Maori who support its message.
"There are a lot of Maori out there who work hard, they pay their fair share of taxes, and they just want to get on with their life. It always seemed growing up you've got to be on the down low if you vote for National but I'm just proud there is more Maori coming through our ranks. We need Maori engaged in politics on all sides because the future of New Zealand is ultimately determined by what is going on in Wellington," Mr Bidois says.
There has been strong early voting for the by-election, reflecting strong campaigning by Mr Bidois and Labour's Shanan Halbert.
