Tipene revival could be step closer
Old boys of Tipene are hanging on to the dream of reopening the south Auckland Maori boarding school which closed almost 20 years ago.
St Stephen’s School Old Boy’s Association chair Joe Harawira is planning a major announcement at this weekend’s biennial reunion event at Kokohinau Marae in Te Teko.
He says there is little enthusiasm for a school which is rooted in the past, but supporters have been exploring options for a new school based on contemporary needs which is also able to drive successful educational outcomes for Maori boys.
Reopening committee member Nathan Durie, the principal of Palmerston North’s Manukura, says too many Maori boys are failing in education, and must invest, innovate, and ensure that the current trends of underachievement are not allowed to continue.
