Select committee visits Ihumātao camp
Green MP Marama Davidson says today's visit to the Ihumātao protest camp by the Māori affairs select committee will help her fellow MPs understand the depth of opposition to a housing development on the site.
The committee made the trip to Māngere after hearing submissions in Auckland on a bill to entrench the Māori seats.
Ms Davidson says the committee has received a petition from the Save Our Unique Landscape group asking the government to find a peaceful solution to the stand-off before Fletcher Development moves in with its bulldozers.
She says MPs need to understand what is at stake.
"We also need to understand as a select committee the courage and determination of the campaign who are very resolute, we are coming up to four years now they have been campaigning hard on resisting the development, protecting the land, protecting Ihumātao," Ms Davidson says.
