TVNZ to hand over control of Māori archive
Pressure from the New Zealand Māori Council and Māori screen industry organisation Ngā Aho Whakaari has resulted in TVNZ ruling out the sale of Māori archival material through its distribution deal with United States company Getty Images.
Ngā Aho Whakaari chair Hineani Melbourne says TVNZ told the organisation's annual meeting the TVNZ’s collection would remain in Aotearoa.
The state broadcaster will vest access of its Māori material with a Māori body.
A Te Puni Kōkiri review or the Māori media sector will help determine who that body should be.
Ms Melbourne thanked TVNZ for having another look at the licensing agreement and its willingness to change.
Ngā Aho Whakaari will hold consultation hui on the Te Puni Kōkiri review in Auckland next Wednesday and Rotorua on Thursday.
