Jewels tell of water fight
The debate over water ownership has inspired Ngāti Porou environmental jeweller JoAnna Mere’s latest exhibition at Waikanae’s Tutere Gallery.
For Currency: Wai Taonga, Mere used salvaged metals including copper, brass, steel, iron, gold and silver to represent air and water in dynamic scenes of windswept mountain lochs, waterfalls, forest streams, estuarine coastlines, tundra and sky.
She says she wants to question the values placed on water and challenge people to consider their role as kaitiaki.
Also in the show is a paua-shell like cloak, Kapiti Matariki Korowai, that Mere created with 100 local school children as a visual statement about the effects of plastic packaging.
Tutere Gallery is open from Friday to Sunday, and the artist will give a floor talk this Saturday before the exhibition ends.
