Council chips in with reo lesson venue
A Christchurch restaurant owner has been given the use of the newly-opened central city library to run free te reo Māori classes.
Anton Matthews offered free lessons at his Wigram restaurant Fush earlier this year, but demand means he quickly shifted them to a nearby school hall.
He says the exercise shows there’s a deep desire in Ōtautahi to learn te reo Māori.
His lessons are designed to teach people the tools to make basic conversation in te reo in a fun, informal, and supportive environment.
Ōtautahi City Councilor Vicki Buck says for te reo to be normalised in Aotearoa, more people need to learn at least the basics.
Classes will be held at the library each Monday evening until Christmas.
Fush is a finalist in this year’s Te Reo Māori Awards, which will be announced on Friday.
