New world of financial literacy beckons
The creator of an online financial literacy application says she’s proud to have come up with a Maori version.
Kendall Flutey from Ngai Tahu and Ngati Kahungunu developed Banqer five years ago, allowing children to earn digital currency for various classroom tasks and then practice using it in ways that will give them the skills they will need as adults.
Banqer is used by more than 65,000 kiwi kids.
She says translating it into te reo normalises the language and also brings financial literacy to a group that could otherwise miss out.
It is being piloted in five kura to ensure the te reo version is fit for purpose.
"So we’ve got it in the hands of those kura kaupapa to hopefully co-create what the solution might be that is really effective for tauira and also for kaiako necause another challenge is this is a whole new world for them and we can't assume they have used technology like this before or that they are financially confident themselves because a majority of kiwis aren’t," Ms Flutey says.
