Protesters want papists out of Petera
The leader of protest at Hāto Petera College wants the Māori Catholic boarding school to reopen … without the church.
The school will hear tomorrow morning whether Education Minister Chris Hipkins will go through with his intention to removed the school’s integrated status, cutting off any state funding.
Reti Boynton, who has moved into the school’s marae, says the school stands on what was part of a large block of Auckland's North Shore gifted by Ngāti Paoa for the education of Māori.
He wants to see it back in working order.
"But basically I don’t think I want this kura to be in working order with the Catholic Church involved in it. They've got a reputation for child pedophilia so I don't want them to have nothing to do with our kids," Mr Boynton says.
