Rahui laid as Waiheke marina back in court
Supporters of the Ngāti Paoa kaumātua Trust Board this morning placed a rāhui on Waiheke’s Pūtiki Bay.
The attempted ban on a controversial marina development was timed to coincide with a Ngāti Paoa Trust Board challenge in the Environment Court aimed at stopping work until a plan is in place to protect the area’s Kororā or little blue penguins.
Board supporter Kelly Klink says the developer’s proposed management plan is inadequate to protect the penguins and it ignores mātauranga Māori.
"If they did address mātauranga Māori they wouldn't be moving ahead with it. It's really that simple because it's not tika to do what they're doing and even this morning when the rāhui was laid you could hear the kororā, you could hear the crying, there's a lot of movement in that bay and it's not just about the kororā any more, it's an ongoing effect to other species in that space," she says.
Kelly Klink says the Ngāti Paoa Trust Board expects a quick response from the two-day Environment Court hearing.
