Manawatu Council faces Maori backlash
A hīkoi against Manawatū District Council's vote against Māori wards drew hundreds of people to the council's Feilding headquarters this morning.
Meihana Durie from Te Kōtui Reo Taumata Collective says there is still time for councillors to revisit last week's decision and create wards in time for next year's election.
He says iwi and hapū have been trying for years to have a more effective voice in council.
He says by delaying a decision the council is missing the opportunity to develop a partnership in line with its obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
