Pataua protest focus turns to road
Tangata whenua occupying Department of Conservation land at Pātaua are threatening to close off the road into the Northland village.
Whānau member Kelly Klink says the road has become a major issue in the occupation, which started as a protest against the sale of campground land which tangata whenua say they were wrongly denied possession of in the past.
She says Whangārei District Council has temporarily stopped work on sealing a driveway into the campground to allow time for talks toward resolution of issues on Pātaua Island.
"The road back on to Pātaua Island is right on the sea shore. it has wiped out the sea beds. So what we are asking for is a better road up onto the island," she says.
Kelly Klink says real estate agency Bayles has been told there is no legal access to the campground land it is selling.
