$18m boost for creative spaces
Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Carmel Sepuloni says people with mental health needs, disabilities, or those just looking for social connection can benefit from places where they can practice and participate in arts and culture.
Her ministry has established an $18 million fund to support creative spaces for the disadvantaged.
One such space is Te Whare Toi o Ngāruawāhia, where three quarters of the people who attend classes or community projects are Māori.
"The different things they can offer are broad ranging. Rongoā is one of the things they practice and teach. It all leads back to value for our creative arts sector, the people that work in them, the people that access those programmes ," Minister Sepuloni says.
Creative spaces can receive a maximum grant of $150,000 a year each over three years.
