Hīkoi brings Dome valley fight to city
Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua is calling for opponents of a planned mega-landfill in Dome Valley to hikoi up Queen St on July 17, Friday week.
Once the hīkoi arrives in Aotea Square it will deliver a petition to Mayor Phil Goff.
The rūnanga says the tip will pose significant ongoing risks to the sustainability and mauri of the Hoteo River, Kaipara Moana and the broader environment.
Ngāti Whātua is also calling on the council to halt all discussions with tip creators Waste Management NZ and form a treaty-based partnership with iwi that will assist communities to manage waste in a way that puts Papatūānuku and the community at the centre of decision making.
